Pilot Pen Wrap-up, Friday, August 28th

Written by  Jack Cunniff
2009 Pilot Pen TennisSummary of Friday’s (lack of) Pilot Pen action:

As rain played havoc with the semifinals, tournament officials moved the doubles action indoors to the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center at Yale University. There is limited capacity at the indoor facility, so the tournament is still hoping to keep the singles action on the Stadium Court of the Connecticut Tennis Center.

Incidentally, with a seating capacity of 15,000, the Stadium Court here is tied with Wimbledon's as the third largest tennis stadium in the world in terms of capacity.

List of tennis stadiums by capacity.

Some WTA stats leaders for the Pilot Pen, through the quarterfinals:
  • Svetlana Kuznetsova leads the tournament in aces, having served 12 in total. Flavia Pennetta (11) and Virginie Razzano (10) trail.
  • The shortest WTA match at this year’s event was the first round double bagel that Caroline Wozniacki served to Edina Gallovits (43 minutes).
  • The longest match was the second round encounter between Anna Chakvetadze and Sybille Bammer. Chakvetadze won 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 49 minutes.
Marcelo Melo and André Sa
Defending Champions Marcelo Melo (L) and André Sa lost in the indoor semifinals today to Austrian team of Julian Knowle and Jürgen Melzer

Semifinal head-to-heads:
  • Caroline Wozniacki leads Flavia Pennetta, 1-0. Wozniacki won on clay in Bastad earlier this summer.
  • Amélie Mauresmo leads Elena Vesnina, 1-0. Their only match came indoors, in Moscow 2006, when Mauresmo won in a third set tiebreak.
  • Fernando Verdasco leads Igor Andreev, 3-1. Andreev won their last encounter, a straight sets victory at the 2008 US Open.
  • Sam Querrey leads Jose Acasuso, 1-0. In addition to the main tour match at the 2007 Australian Open, Querrey also won a qualifying match the two played in the 2007 Paris Masters Series event.

2009 Pilot Pen Trivia:

1. Of the eight singles semifinalists who remain, which two (one man, one woman) are undefeated in semifinal matches this year?

2. Which two semifinalists have not beaten a Top Ten-ranked player this year?

3. Who has forever earned a place in my heart by coining the phrase “Boom Boom Tennis”?

4. Which semifinalist has the best Grand Slam singles record on the year?

5. How many people did Mary Joe Fernandez crash into when she was bolting from the pre-game ESPN2 studio to the commentary booth before last night’s Kuznetsova-Mauresmo quarterfinal?

6. Which semifinalist is ranked furthest away from his/her career high ranking?

7. In her opening round match, Caroline Wozniacki beat Edina Gallovits 6-0, 6-0. When is the last time a Pilot Pen match featured two love sets?

8. What time is Pilot Pen Tournament Director Anne Worcester holding her “Oh-God-We’re-Screwed” news conference?

Answers:

1. Caroline Wozniacki (6-0) and Sam Querrey (4-0) have perfect semifinal records this year. The records of other players: Flavia Pennetta (3-3), Amélie Mauresmo (1-2), Elena Vesnina (1-1), Jose Acasuso (1-3), Igor Andreev (0-2), and Fernando Verdasco (1-1).

2. Neither Acasuso nor Andreev have been able to defeat a Top Ten opponent in 2009.

3. To heck with Mary Carillo and “Big Babe” tennis! Vesnina has a future in commentating, as she described her play as intelligent, and not “Boom Boom.” Read Thursday’s Wrap-up for more!

4. Verdasco, who has compiled an 11-3 Grand Slam singles record in 2009 on the strength of his Australian open semifinal. Other records are Wozniacki (7-3), Mauresmo (5-3), Pennetta (4-3), Vesnina (4-3), Andreev (7-3), Querrey (2-3), and Acasuso (1-2).

5. At least one (me). Sorry, Mary Joe!

6. Acasuso is currently at minus 32 (current rank is 52, career high of 20). Other stats are Mauresmo at minus 17 (18/1), Andreev at minus 12 (30/18), Verdasco at minus 3 (10/7), Wozniacki at minus 1 (9/8), and the rest are at their peak: Pennetta (10/10), Querrey (23/23), and Vesnina (32/32).

7. This was a bit of a trick question. In the first round of 2008, there were two love sets in a first round match between Tsvetana Pironkova and Bethanie Mattek. Pironkova won the match, 7-6(4), 0-6, 6-0. Prior to that, the 2006 Women’s final saw two love sets played when Justine Henin defeated Lindsay Davenport, 6-0, 1-0 ret.

8. I really don’t know, but this is the PG-13 version of a quote overheard in the Media Center.
